Getting Involved in Your Child’s Education
Now, more than ever, it is important to be involved in your school and school board’s decisions. Like it or not, schools are responsible for aiding in molding our children’s minds and personalities, among other things. It is very important that parents are aware of and involved in making the decisions related to our children’s education. If not; they are left up to the partial, agenda driven bureaucrats in government on local and state levels and corrupt teacher associations. If these past couple of years have taught us anything, it is the fact that we can not trust them.
How do I get involved, as a parent?
Good question, I’m glad that you asked! I will give some examples here from minimal involvement to more time consuming involvement.
Take a few minutes every day to discuss the school day with your child. To survive in today’s world, almost every family find both parents working. Which means our time as parents is limited and we also can be distracted by many things like technology, bills, etc … Make it a point to take a few minutes each day and ask your child(ren) about their school day. What did you do in school today? What topics are you working on? What are your thoughts on said topic? Take a look at their homework and anything brought home. This is a minimal checkpoint in awareness, but it can be done by even the busiest of parents.
Volunteer. All schools have positions you can volunteer your time and involvement in. Most schools have 2 class parents per homeroom and this is a great opportunity to be hands on. The school PTA often look for volunteers for events and class trip chaperones, and other things. You may also join the PTA as member or even a board member (usually requires a paid membership).
Meetings. Attend PTA meetings, attend Board of Education meetings. Attending meetings related to your child(ren)’s schooling and education is one of the best ways to be involved. Listen to the school business, topics and other related items being discussed and interact with other parents. Hear other parents’ comments, questions and concerns that speak up during the public commentary segment. Express your own concerns, questions and comments during this time.
Board of Education. The most involved on this example list, but the most beneficial and influential way. Run for Board of Education in your local town. BE a parent making the decisions for your child(ren)! There is a school board election every year. This year’s NJ state petition deadline of July 25th has long passed, however, potential candidates can still run as a “write-in” candidate. Will you be on your town’s ballot come this November?
In Your Town
Our friends over at Chaos and Control have compiled a list of candidates sorted by county that are invested in advocating for our children. Take a look and see which candidates in your town share our same interests and The New Jersey Project approves of.
