It all starts at the local level! Local parents have to become "doers" they have to show up at the BOE meetings, they have to voice their opinions.
Some aren’t sure what to do, some not sure how or where to start, most wait for someone else to take the lead and then follow. With this being said, we have created a guide to get you started. We have generalized this guide so it can be applied to any parent advocacy topic.
Show up at your local BOE meetings.
Be informed. Get informed. Ask questions, express concerns.
Take charge and light that fire!
It only takes one person to make a difference and get things started. Once there is a leader, people will often follow.
Awareness and Education are KEY!
Most parents aren't aware of what's going on and from the ones that are, some aren't completely aware of the extent. Research and provide accurate information. Be aware of false information being spread by opposing views, especially politically charged, to deter pushback and intentionally misinform people.
Utilize social media.
Form a local only parent group for like minded parents, share information on what is happening and the details.
This can be specific to topic or a general parent advocacy group dealing with many topics.
Post and recruit other parents from your local town's pages.
Follow and/or align with other Parent Advocate Groups like PAGS or Chaos and Control
Partner with local political candidates or groups standing in favor of your cause for parental advocacy.
Create a flyer (digital and/or printed) and distribute digitally in the local social media town groups. Distribute printed flyers around town. (Please check with local ordinances regarding required permits and other legalities regarding this).
Organize for all parents from aforementioned parent advocacy group to attend a scheduled BOE meeting and speak up.
Inform local news and media companies about meeting and results.
RUN FOR BOARD OF EDUCATION.
